George Stevens
For this edition of the George Stevens Lecture on Directing, six-time Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Caleb Deschanel will discuss Giant’s visual language and social impact before the screening. Deschanel will be joined on stage by special guests George Stevens Jr. and Academy Governor Kim Taylor Coleman, a veteran casting director and president of the board of the Academy Foundation.
The George Stevens Lecture on Directing was the first of the Academy’s ongoing lectures dedicated to the art of filmmaking. The series was established by the Academy in 1981 after Stevens’s personal papers were donated to the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library Special Collections by George Stevens Jr. Included among the George Stevens Papers are Dimitri Tiomkin’s handwritten pencil sketches for the music score for Giant.

In the 1956 film adaptation of the novel by Edna Ferber, screenwriters Fred Guiol and Ivan Moffatt bring to life the saga of a family of Texas ranchers headed by Jordan “Bick” Benedict (Rock Hudson) and his wife, Maryland socialite Leslie Lynnton (Elizabeth Taylor); and ambitious ranch hand Jett (James Dean, in his final performance). Visionary for its depictions of progressive social justice themes and Taylor’s bold depiction of a staunch feminist, Giant is an epic story that spans generations and tackles the conflicting mores that governed behavior in America during the first half of the 20th century.
