Dimitri Tiomkin concert suites from Friendly Persuasion and Guns of Navarone

Dimitri Tiomkin concert suites including music selections from Friendly Persuasion and the popular “Overture” for The Guns of Navarone are the latest additions to the Symphony Pops series from the Hal Leonard Corporation.

The concert suites—typeset and ready to print before the COVID-19 pandemic hit—await the printers coming back online. After that, the music scores and parts will be available for purchase.

Friendly Persuasion (Thee I Love)Friendly Persuasion consists of “The Fair” and “Thee I Love.” This seven-minute suite as arranged by Christopher Palmer and Patrick Russ will certainly be a popular in concert programs. “The Fair” (3:00 minutes with optional chorus) is an upbeat instrumental polka with an Americana feel. It works well for Fourth of July (Independence Day) and Thanksgiving celebrations. “Thee I Love” (3:45 minutes) for orchestra features the love theme, a popular instrumental number at Valentine’s Day concerts. The 1956 film from director William Wyler stars Gary Cooper as the head of a Quaker family. The song, made into a hit by singer Pat Boone, has been covered by everyone from The Four Aces to Arethra Franklin.

The thrilling three-minute “Overture” from The Guns of Navarone is among the most popular film openings in history, with its instantly recognizable and rousing theme by Dimitri Tiomkin. The 1961 film stars Gregory Peck, David Niven, and Anthony Quinn, among others.

While movie overtures, once heard by filmgoers before the opening curtain in magnificent palaces built for cinema, are largely a thing of the past, there are notable exceptions, such as the overture for the roadshow version of Quentin Tarantino’s film, The Hateful Eight (2015).

The “Overture” from The Guns of Navarone is for professional symphony orchestras as arranged by Christopher Palmer and Patrick Russ.
