The Boston Pops, led by Keith Lockhart, will perform Dimitri Tiomkin’s “Clock, Showdown and Finale” from the film High Noon on May 20 and 21 at Symphony Hall. The “Clock, Showdown and Finale,” as arranged by Christopher Palmer and Patrick Russ, is from a concert suite for High Noon published by the Hal Leonard Corporation.
The first half of the program, “Film Night: Williams on Williams,” features classic music by the film scoring giants of Hollywood: Tiomkin, Korngold, Steiner, Waxman, and Rozsa. After intermission the music of John Williams, from Star Wars to Harry Potter, will be performed. Conductor Lockhart succeeded Laureate Conductor Williams in 1995. Williams himself succeeded Arthur Fiedler in 1980.
Fiedler and Tiomkin collaborated eighty years ago, in 1946, when the Boston Pops Orchestra recorded Tiomkin’s music from the David O. Selznick film, Duel in the Sun for a commercial soundtrack. Decades before Charles Gerhardt landmark RCA recordings, the Boston Pops recording of Duel in the Sun became one of the first non-movie-studio-orchestra recordings of music written for a film.
